Middle School
(Grades 6-8)

Students in grades 6 through 8 are considered middle school students and are prepared for high school by a content-specific approach to teaching.  Teachers encourage independent learning and problem-solving in an atmosphere of respect and cooperation.

Students integrate the use of technology in their classrooms and on research projects done both independently and with cooperative teams.  For at least one period each week students visit the fully equipped computer lab, and, under the direction of their homeroom teacher and the Educate Team, learn to incorporate technology into content-based projects.  Students in middle school are given in-depth instruction on the usage of several different applications, including, but not specific to: Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Excel, SmartBoard applications, Internet research, etc...  These programs are constantly used to enhance content learning.

The school has a strong literature-based reading program with an emphasis on writing, speaking, and listening skills.  Middle School students take 2 seperate courses to fulfill these requirements: Literature and English.  Included in Literature classes are Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, Reading Fluency.  Included in English classes are Spelling, Writing, and Grammar.

Students in grades 6-8 are assigned a homeroom teacher who they report to for attendance,  administrative, and dismissal purposes.  However, in coordination with a middle-school approach to education, there are separate teachers for each subject area.  Our students leave OLP with
strong organizational skills and readiness for a high school environment.

Advanced courses in Mathematics and Literature are offered to both 7th and 8th graders who meet the class qualifications.  The 8th grade Advanced Math students take the Regents Exam in June and are given high school credit for a passing score.  Middle School students also participate weekly in several Special classes taught by other staff members - Art, Computer, Gym, Library, Music.

Students in 7th and 8th grade spend two years preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation.  This Sacrament is celebrated every two years; during their preparatory years, students are required to complete community service hours in order to help them reflect on and share their religious faith.

Progress Reports and Report Cards are completed quarterly on the Churchwerks Program designed by the Archdiocese of New York.  Grades are determined based on a pre-determined scale assigned to OLP by the Archdiocese.

6th graders participate in their annual Poetry Retreat at Hudson River Park
7th and 8th graders prepare and receive Confirmation together on a biannual basis
Parents place the OLP ring on 8th graders at the annual Ring Ceremony
